African Green Opal was discovered in Ethiopia and in the West African country of Mali. It is characterized by its swirling golden caramel, rust and brown matrix against a background of deep varying shades of green. While precious opals are known for their opalescence or fire, Opals lacking this showy play of colors are referred to as “Common Opal”. The African Green Opal is a “common – or volcanic - opal”.
